i am a serious chilihead.

i would suggest salad king and getting the 20 chillies. i like it. but i don't get it all the time bb/c the chillies are quite overpowering, i alternate with the 15 chillies and just add hotsauce as i please.

I think that Salad King was the prior restaurant at the same location, which did indeed serve salads!
When the current owners took over they didn't (possibly couldn't afford to) change the name. So the Salad King it remains to this day.
This is an honourable tradition in T.O. We also have New York Subway - that doesn't serve subs - another inherited name.

We actually wandered up Yonge street (I am from Texas originally where we wander a lot :) and happened to walk up to this with no recommendation and decided to try it !! My entrée was very good- yellow curry shrimp. The shrimp did come with shell on, which is awkward to take them all out of the bowl and have to remove the shell, then place them back in the curry. The good news is they were a very good size and there was a lot of shrimp- for the cost I was really pleased but a lot of work? Is that typical in Toronto to serve shrimp with the shells on? We only do that back home when its for a cold appetizer or paella. Anyway, the curry was perfection in terms of seasoning and consistency- just really great. My friend had some noodle dish that she loved, beef, that I liked but we both agreed it was all about the curry. The service was awful, we had a brand new waitress who just really was confused and she needed help that no one was giving her, it didn't look like the other waiters we having problems though and the food came very quickly. Overall, would definitely go back but have one burning question- why is it called the Salad King since the name is misleading considering there are about 3 salads and from the looks of them they weren't very enticing ?

I too, once tried a curry and it tasted as if the meat and vegetables were cooked separately (and cooked unseasoned as if salt never existed) and then added to the sauce. Usually, the meat is cooked at the beginning and simmers away in the curry sauce to take on the flavours of the sauce. The kitchen took very untasty shortcuts. To me, this is not authentic and that would be fine because then I thought, okay, I can think of this as a Thai-inspired restaurant and after all, everyone has their own interpretations.

But then, the service sucked. And I've been there about three times and each time I didn't like the service or the food. Yes, they're busy because of Ryerson students (and I was one), but I don't see this as an excuse. Once, everyone else at my table had their food and I had to call a server twice to ask what was taking my food so long and my food came when everyone just about finished theirs. Given the shortcuts they took with the food, it should have come much more quickly.

I think some dishes are good there and some are not. One time I had - maybe it was the green curry chicken, it tasted as if the chicken breast was steamed by itself, then dumped into the green curry sauce. Tasteless.

It's not really an authentic thai food. Let's just say I've had better. Some of the servers need to learn how to smile. I must admit tho, the tropical ice cream and the spicy fish are damn tasty!

I really like the great prices here, great for the mostly student clientele. For those who have stayed and eaten in Thailand, some of Salad King's dishes are made in Toronto Thai food. I like the curries but will found the mango salad and pad thai below average and not authentic. Although there are better authentic Thai restaurant like Young Thailand and Sasi's on Jarvis, this place is good for those looking for a quick simple meal.

Finally tried Salad King a week or so ago. I'm underwhelmed, to tell the truth. First, I have to say I am not a big fan of Thai food on the whole and have never understood its popularity. (I have a feeling it would be very much better in Thailand, though.) However, I was forced into a corner on that night and went to SK, buoyed by all the wonderful comments I have heard about it, here and elsewhere.

I got pad thai (5 chili) and combination spicy (3 chili). Oh and some veg spring rolls.

Spring rolls were OK. The sauce wasn't too exciting though. Not enough zing.
Pad Thai was OK. Just OK. I still prefer the old Bamboo or these days Queen Mother -- Less gummy and fresher.
Combination spicy was a huge disappointment. It was a chopped up mess of seafood and carrots and onions (I think). The whole thing was the same texture and all the tastes blended too. This was an expensive dish for SK.

Their ordering system is reasonably good. Could do better. Oh and I can not stand it when servers go into long rants about the spiciness of the chili system, suggesting I may not be able to handle it. Why bother with a chili rating system if you don't trust your customers to choose for themselves. Their menu warns that the food is already quite spicy. Not IMO. And, yes, it's OK to mention it briefly -- as in, do you like your food spicy? -- but PUHLEEZ don't go on about it. It's insulting.

So that's it. I won't bother with it again.
